약효_이뇨, 요통에 쓴다.
가지가 부드럽고 탄력이 있어서 옛날에는 말채찍이나 산간지방에서 눈 위 를 걸을 때 쓰던 설피를 만들 때 사용되었다. 이뇨 작용에 좋다고 하나 급성일 경우에는 맞지 않는다. 여름에서 가올에 줄기 잎을 채취하여 잘게 잘 라 햇볕에 건조시킨 것을 달여서 복용한다.
